Elon Musk's declaration that he would "own no house" has resurfaced amid renewed interest in his real estate footprint. The pledge, made on X (then Twitter), quickly became one of the billionaire's most widely discussed personal commitments. At the time, Musk stated he would sell off his physical possessions, including his homes, to signal a break from traditional wealth displays.
Since that announcement, Musk has largely followed through. He sold several high-profile properties, including a sprawling Bel Air estate and a historic home once owned by actor Gene Wilder. The sales generated millions, but they also left observers wondering where the SpaceX and Tesla CEO actually lays his head at night.
The answer appears to be a small, rented house in Boca Chica, Texas. The property, valued at roughly $50,000, sits near SpaceX's launch facility. Musk has described living in a modest three-bedroom home that he rents from the company. He has also been known to crash at friends' places or sleep on factory floors during intense production pushes.
Despite the pledge, Musk has not completely abandoned real estate. Reports indicate he maintains a compound in Austin, Texas, where he hosts family and close associates. He also reportedly owns a property in the San Francisco Bay Area, though he uses it infrequently.
The "own no house" promise remains a talking point, but Musk's actual living situation is more flexible than the slogan suggests. He moves between rented homes, company facilities, and private properties, all while maintaining his public image as a minimalist billionaire.
