A Baltimore attorney has been handed a 15-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a fraudulent real estate scheme that targeted banks during the sale of homes and apartments across Maryland. The case highlights a pattern of deception where the lawyer allegedly helped manipulate property transactions to secure larger loans than the properties were actually worth.
Court documents reveal that the scheme involved inflating the sale prices of residential properties. The attorney, whose name was not immediately released in the sentencing report, reportedly worked with co-conspirators to submit false documents to lenders. These documents included phony purchase agreements and inflated appraisals, which allowed the group to pocket the difference between the real price and the fraudulent loan amount.
Prosecutors argued that the attorney used his legal expertise to legitimize the paperwork, making the fraud harder to detect. The scheme reportedly caused significant financial losses to several lending institutions. In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the attorney to pay restitution and serve two years of supervised release following his incarceration. The case serves as a reminder of the legal profession's role in maintaining the integrity of real estate transactions.
