Artificial intelligence is having a moment. From writing emails to generating art, the technology is creeping into nearly every industry. Real estate is no exception. A growing number of online platforms now promise to use AI to list your home, field buyer questions, and even negotiate offers. But according to Realtor Allison Ziefert, homeowners should think twice before handing the keys to a machine.
Ziefert argues that selling a home involves far more than data crunching. While AI can analyze market trends and suggest a listing price, it cannot read the room during a tense negotiation. It cannot sense a buyer's hesitation or pick up on the subtle cues that tell an experienced agent when to push and when to hold back. "A computer can tell you the median price per square foot," Ziefert says, "but it cannot walk a family through a home and help them imagine their future there."
There is also the emotional weight of a home sale. Sellers often feel anxious, rushed, or overwhelmed. A human agent provides reassurance and guidance through paperwork, inspections, and closing procedures. AI, for all its speed, lacks empathy. It cannot calm a nervous seller or explain why a lowball offer might still be worth considering.
Ziefert does not dismiss AI entirely. She uses it herself for tasks like drafting listing descriptions or sorting through data. But she sees it as a tool, not a replacement. The personal touch, the local knowledge, and the human judgment that come with a seasoned agent remain irreplaceable. For now, at least, selling your home still requires a real person behind the screen.
