I live in a 97-square-foot micro-apartment: Better than larger space

When I first moved into a 97-square-foot micro-apartment in Paris, I told myself it was just a short-term solution. A place to crash while I figured out my next move. That was two years ago, and I have no plans to leave. The truth is, living in a space smaller than most people's walk-in closets has changed my life in ways I did not expect.

The biggest surprise was the freedom. With so little room, I cannot buy things I do not need. Every item has to earn its place. That means no impulse shopping, no clutter, and no wasted money on furniture that just sits there. I own one set of dishes, three outfits for work, and a single pair of shoes. It sounds extreme, but it is actually liberating. I spend less time cleaning, less time organizing, and less time worrying about stuff.

The layout forces creativity. My bed folds into the wall. My desk doubles as my dining table. The shower is basically a wet room, but I do not mind. I have learned to use vertical space for storage and to keep everything within arm's reach. Cooking in a kitchen the size of a closet taught me to make simple, fresh meals instead of relying on processed food.

The social aspect is also better than I expected. When your apartment is too small for guests, you meet people in cafes, parks, and public squares. I know my neighbors better than I ever did in a big apartment building. Paris itself becomes my living room. I read in the Tuileries, work from a corner bistro, and host friends at a nearby wine bar.

Some people think I am crazy. They ask how I can live without a couch or a full-sized fridge. But I have traded square footage for location, lower rent, and a simpler life. I wake up every morning in the heart of the city, steps away from the Seine, with no mortgage stress and no rooms full of unused junk. For me, that is worth more than any extra space.
