Rehoboth Beach has long held a special place in the hearts of LGBTQ+ travelers, often called the "Nation's Summer Capital" for its welcoming embrace and vibrant queer scene. But as property values soar and trendy boutiques replace dive bars, some visitors wonder if this Delaware gem has become too expensive for the average vacationer. The question lingers: have we been priced out of our own gay paradise?
Not quite yet, according to locals and frequent visitors. While it is true that Rehoboth has seen significant development and rising costs, it remains more accessible than many other queer beach destinations. Compared to the eye-watering prices of Provincetown or Fire Island, Rehoboth still offers a range of affordable motels, shared rentals, and casual eateries. The key is knowing where to look. Off-season visits, midweek stays, and booking well in advance can keep a trip reasonable. The boardwalk still has cheap fries and saltwater taffy, and the beach itself is free.
What makes Rehoboth special is its balance. It has not fully transformed into an exclusive enclave. You still see rainbow flags flying over modest cottages next to new condos. The community fights to keep some old-school charm alive. So, while the paradise might be getting a bit more polished, it has not locked its gates. For now, you can still find a slice of queer heaven without emptying your savings account.
