NEW YORK, N.Y. - A Bronx man is facing charges for allegedly posing as a real estate agent and stealing $25,000 from three victims in a rental scam that took place in 2025, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending arraignment, reportedly advertised fake apartment listings online. When prospective tenants expressed interest, he would schedule showings at actual buildings, often using lockboxes or keys he had obtained through other means. After the victims agreed to rent the units, he collected security deposits and first month's rent in cash or via wire transfer, then disappeared.
The scam came to light when the victims arrived on their move-in dates to find other tenants already living in the apartments. One victim lost $10,000, while two others lost a combined $15,000. The investigation involved the Manhattan DA's office and the New York City Police Department.
Bragg warned the public to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a real estate agent. He urged renters to check licenses through the New York State Department of State and to avoid paying large sums in cash or through untraceable methods. The suspect faces multiple counts of grand larceny and fraud. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison.
